deer deterrent

Attaching a medium sized piece of tin to a post near your garden can function as a deer deterrent if you've got enough wind where you live.

The above configuration gives off a nice metalic sound as it flaps back and forth.

I wouldn't want to rely on this method due to the obvious problem of no movement if there is no wind, but it could function as an adequate back up to a motorized deterrent.

It seems like the urban deer problem is notching up a few degrees in some areas where especially hungry bucks are eating small birds as a snack. Bird lovers beware-the video actually shows a deer eating a small bird.

The birds are fighting back with everything they've got, but their small beaks and soft feathers are no match for the bone crushing teeth of a predator over 100 times their size.

How can you help? Stop spending money on deer repellants that only last a few weeks! Invest that cash in a few good mechanical deer deterrents to not only protect your garden and flowers but to help the beautiful birds that love to vist our backyard feeders at this time of year.

rotisserie motor failure notes

This rotisserie motor has been going almost non stop for a bit over 100 days and the metal case is paying the price.

At first I thought the noise of metal rubbing on metal might help with the deterrent factor, and it didn't seem to be all that much resistance...but I guess constant pressure can wear anything or anybody down to the point of damage if the issue gets pushed long enough.

I need to go back to the drawing board and figure out some way of decreasing the friction. The above motor was shut down before I did any real damage, but some TLC along with a few adjustments are called for before it can go back to the front line.

Deer Departed image montage

Deer-Departed.com is a good place to go for information on a variety of mechanical deterrents and chemical repellants.

I especially liked their page on deer alert velocity whistles designed to spook deer away from jumping out in front of your vehicle. It's nice to see all the people commenting on personal experiences. I installed a set on a Toyota station wagon, and once observed a deer pause at the corner of the road as if he may have heard the whistle. It's very hard to say. I never had a deer collision with the whistles while driving through some heavy populations in rural Ohio.
